The Meridian Audio Research & Consultancy team brings together more than 30 years experience in inventing, developing and implementing DSP algorithms for audio. We provide high quality research and audio solutions for our clients as well as for Meridian products.
Current clients include…
- Dolby Laboratories. Meridian develops the library providing encoding, decoding and editing of Dolby TrueHD and MLP within Dolby Media Producer and editing of Dolby TrueHD within Sonic Solution’s Scenarist.
- McLaren Automotive Meridian is proud to be working with McLaren Automotive, the independent car division based at McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. Our award-winning team of designers and engineers is developing Meridian’s first ever in-car audio system for the McLaren MP4-12C high performance sports car. Meridian is also working with other companies on in-car audio systems.
Our areas of expertise include…
Lossless encoding and decoding. Meridian invented Meridian Lossless Packing, the mandatory lossless format selected for DVD-Audio in 1998. Meridian and Dolby Laboratories, Inc. co-developed Dolby TrueHD, selected for Blu-ray Disc in 2005, based on MLP.
- Lossless encoding/decoding for Blu-ray Disc (2005: WinMLP, Dolby Media Producer)
- Editing Dolby TrueHD Streams for seamless connections (2009: Dolby Media Producer, 2010: Sonic Solutions Scenarist)
- Meridian offers MLP Encoder Software – please click here for additional information
High-resolution digital signal processing for audio Meridian pioneered high-resolution processing with work on filter topologies, noise-shaping to maximise the dynamic range available in a channel, upsampling and apodising.
- Double-precision feedback filtering (1991: D6000 DSP Loudspeaker)
- Noise-shaping (1995: 518 Resolution Enhancement)
- Double-precision feedforward and feedback filtering (2000: DSP8000 DSP Loudspeaker)
- Apodising filters (2007: 808.2 Reference CD Player)
Spatial audio Meridian brings the best of spatial sound to its customers for both music and movies. Innovative Trifield and Ambisonic technologies have been included in Meridian surround sound decoders from their introduction in 1994. Meridian was the first with a DSP implementation of ProLogic (1994), Dolby Digital (1995) and DTS decoding for 5.1 (1996).
- The 861 Surround Controller is capable of driving loudspeakers delivering height information as well as speakers in the horizontal plane for a fully immersive three-dimensional audio experience.
- Meridian demonstrated full 3D immersive audio at the 2007 UK AES Conference.
- Meridian’s popular F80 compact sound system employs proprietary stereo widening techniques to create a large sound from a small box.
- Meridian Room Correction controls the interaction between loudspeakers and room, using automatically generated filters to manage the reverberation time of the room modes for optimum clarity and localisation.
Loudspeaker design Meridian introduced the first DSP loudspeaker – the D6000 – in 1991, combining the best of DSP filters, active electronics and acoustic design. Additional algorithms for DSP Loudspeakers include:
- Dynamic bass extension (1993: DSP5000 DSP Loudspeaker)
- DSP drive-unit thermal protection (2000: DSP8000 DSP Loudspeaker)
